Somatic Experiencing™ Therapy in Scottsdale & Phoenix, AZ
If you’re searching for somatic therapy in Scottsdale or Phoenix, you may feel stuck in anxiety, stress, or emotional patterns that don’t fully shift—no matter how much you talk about them.
That’s because trauma and stress are not just stored in your thoughts—they’re held in your body and nervous system.
Somatic Experiencing™ is a powerful, body-based approach that helps release stored tension, regulate your nervous system, and create a deeper sense of calm and control.
Trauma is stored in the body. Somatic Experiencing™ is a body-centered approach to healing trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine that helps patients process and heal trauma by attending to physical sensations rather than focusing on thoughts or memories of traumatic events. In session, it can feel like a slow version of talk-therapy and mindfulness, but there is so much more going on: We’re actually working in two parts of the brain instead of just the frontal cortex as with CBT, DBT, IFS or other talk therapy models. We are tapping into the limbic brain, which has no sense of time. We are basically giving the nervous system a “reset.” For some patients, another way to think of it is releasing a pressure valve, a little at a time. For those with panic attacks, this can feel much less out of control.
Trauma is stored in the body and it’s cumulative. This is another benefit of SE in that we’re able to address pre-verbal trauma, relational and betrayal trauma that have likely accumulated over the years.
This is a benefit that EMDR therapy can’t necessarily address. It’s common for patients to sometimes have no recollection of trauma other than just a sense of knowing that something happened that is still affecting them in the present. Many patients feel that they’ve “had it up to here” and in some ways it’s literally like that in their body. Complex trauma, or more than one significant traumatic event happening simultaneously or within a short period of time, has become much more common as we’re becoming more aware of what trauma in the nervous system is and how it can be happening in patterns, especially in relationships, addiction patterns, and staggered disclosure of sex addiction.
Trauma is stored in the body as dysregulated survival energy, which manifests as anxiety, depression, chronic stress, physical pain, repetitive intrusive thoughts, autoimmune disease or other symptoms and behaviors. This also contributes to other behaviors such as substance and process addictions, love addiction, love avoidance and sex addiction.

What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a form of trauma therapy that focuses on how the body holds stress, trauma, and emotional experiences.
When something overwhelming happens, your nervous system may not fully process it. This can lead to ongoing symptoms like anxiety, tension, or feeling “on edge.”
Somatic therapy works by gently helping your body complete that process—so you can feel more grounded, regulated, and at ease.
Why Somatic Therapy Works
Many clients come to somatic therapy after trying traditional talk therapy and still feeling stuck.
That’s because talking alone doesn’t always resolve what’s happening in the body.

-
Increasing your ability to feel calm and present
-
Reducing physical symptoms of anxiety
